He knelt on soft red fabric. She laid in a cold white bed. He lifter her hand off of her chest and placed it against his cheek. It was cold and colorless. He started to cry.

Her family stood around the casket with their arms around one another and watched as he slipped a small silver ring around her finger.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have done this a long time ago.”

He placed her hand back down on her chest and pulled another ring out of his pocket. He slipped it on his ring finger and folded his hands above the casket.

“For ten years I had you at my side and I took it for granted,” he said. “For ten years I didn’t give you what you deserved. This is my deepest regret.”

He closed his eyes and leaned over her body. Her face was pale and her eyes were closed. He kissed her on the forehead.

“I will love you for the rest of my life. You loved me for the entirety of yours. I will see you again when it is my time.”

He stood up from the casket and wiped the tears away from his eyes.

For the rest of the funeral he sat in a small wooden chair at the back of the room and watched as people knelt down beside his bride. Some cried. Some smiled. Some came up to him afterward and patted him on his shoulders.

“She was too young,” they said. “Too young.”

He thanked them and nodded and watched the line of light move its way across the floor as the last of the visitors made their way for the door. He sat in silence and waited for the room to grow dark.

The casket closed and the funeral director walked slowly across the room to where he sat.

“It’s ok,” he said. “If you want to stay the night.”

The man looked up, his hand rubbing the new ring that decorated his finger, and smiled.

“Yes,” he said. “I’d like that. It is my honeymoon, after all.”
